My kids love their grandparents. As I’ve observed the unique grandparent-grandchild relationships unfold in my family, I have quickly learned that EVERYTHING is much more fun with grandma or grandpa. Music with Grandma is the latest in a collection of “Grandma and Grandpa” apps by Fairlady Media. This app is an absolutely fantastic way to introduce young children to musical terms, concepts and skills and all with the help of an adorable and lovable grandma!

Music with Grandma is a collection of activities and games that introduce children to music. They will learn what different musical instruments sound like by listening to a sound and matching it to the correct instrument it comes from. Another activity shows them and plays a basic melody and children must look at the notes and listen to the music and choose which note comes next in the pattern. They are given opportunities to play timpani drums by tapping on the screen. They can hear the different sounds each size drum makes and learn that the bigger drums make a lower sound and smaller drums make a higher sound. There are mazes through musical signs where children have to trace along quarter notes or flat signs to get to the end of the maze. Sometimes they are shown a musical scale and they must choose where on the scale a certain note belongs. There are videos of people playing musical instruments that they can watch and every once in a while grandpa makes an appearance and tries to play music!

I have had the pleasure of reviewing two of these awesome “Grandma or Grandpa” apps previously, and I have loved them and so have my kids. This one is no exception! In fact, it may even be my favorite so far! My preschooler absolutely loves this app! He has played it nearly everyday since I got it. It is so gratifying to see him starting to learn basic notes and to watch him listen to a melody and guess which notes come next or arrange notes from lowest to highest. I am a firm believer that musical knowledge helps children learn responsibility and help them do better academically in school. I am so grateful to have tools like “Music with Grandma” to help “musically-challenged” parents like me introduce their children to music and start to cultivate a love of music at an early age!
